Chhattisgarh High Court Convicts Amit Jogi for Murder Conspiracy, Overturns Earlier Acquittal

Court finds Amit Jogi as mastermind behind political assassination of NCP leader Ram Avtar Jaggi; sentences him to life imprisonment

In a landmark judgment dated April 2, 2026, the Chhattisgarh High Court (Division Bench) reversed the acquittal of Amit Jogi in a high-profile murder conspiracy case, convicting him for the orchestrated killing of Ram Avtar Jaggi, a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader. The court held Amit Jogi guilty under Sections 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to life imprisonment with a fine.

The case stems from the murder of Ram Avtar Jaggi on June 4, 2003, near Raipur. Initially, the State Police had filed a charge-sheet against five accused on charges of robbery-murder, but the subsequent investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) revealed a larger political conspiracy implicating 31 accused, including Amit Jogi, son of then Chief Minister Ajit Jogi.

The trial court had acquitted Amit Jogi while convicting others, leading to appeals by the CBI and the complainant, Satish Jaggi, son of the deceased. The High Court undertook a comprehensive re-appreciation of the evidence, including call records, testimonies, and circumstantial proof, and found the trial court's acquittal of Amit Jogi to be perverse and unsupported by evidence.

Key witnesses such as Reginald Jeremiah and others established that Amit Jogi convened meetings at the Chief Minister’s residence and Hotel Green Park to hatch a conspiracy to disrupt an NCP rally and eliminate key leaders including the deceased. The court noted that Amit Jogi’s influential position enabled him to orchestrate the crime, manipulate police investigations, and arrange for imposters to be falsely implicated to mislead the investigation.

The court underscored that conspiracy, by its secret nature, is typically proven through circumstantial evidence, and Amit Jogi’s conduct before and after the murder, as well as his authoritative role in directing the assailants, confirmed his involvement. The judgment further criticized the trial court for unjustifiably distinguishing Amit Jogi’s role from that of other convicted conspirators.

The High Court’s decision followed the Supreme Court’s directive remanding the case for fresh consideration, emphasizing the need for expeditious disposal given the prolonged pendency since 2003. Amit Jogi, currently out on bail, has been directed to surrender within three weeks or face immediate incarceration.

This judgment reaffirms the judiciary’s commitment to uphold the rule of law irrespective of political stature and sends a strong message against the misuse of power to subvert justice.

Bottom Line:

The High Court reversed the acquittal of Amit Jogi in a murder conspiracy case, holding him guilty under Sections 302 and 120B of the IPC. The Court found his role as the mastermind of the conspiracy clearly established, noting his influence and commanding position in orchestrating the crime.
