Investigation Reveals Systematic Pilferage and Institutional Lapses; Scientific Analysis Critical to Uncovering Conspiracy
The Kerala High Court has mandated an extensive investigation into the alleged misappropriation of sacred assets at the Sabarimala Temple, revealing possible organized pilferage and institutional lapses. The judgment, delivered by Justices Raja Vijayaraghavan V and K.V. Jayakumar, follows a suo motu case highlighting grave concerns over the temple's asset management.
The court was presented with a detailed progress report by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Sri H. Venkatesh, ADGP (Law and Order & Crimes), and Sri S. Sasidharan, IPS. The investigation has already resulted in the arrest of 11 individuals in one case (Crime No. 3700/CB/CU-IV/TVPM/D/2025) and 11 in another (Crime No. 3701/CB/CU-IV/TVPM/D/2025), with further suspects under scrutiny.
A pivotal aspect of the investigation is the scientific analysis conducted by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), which identified significant discrepancies in the materials used in gold cladding at the temple. The absence of expected materials in the original plates and their presence in newer ones suggests a methodical substitution, reinforcing suspicions of organized tampering.
The court has directed the SIT to record detailed statements from scientific experts to decode and correlate the analytical findings with physical evidence. This scientific report is central to understanding the transactions conducted in 2024 and 2025 and will aid in identifying the roles of individual accused, as well as any underlying criminal conspiracy.
Additionally, the investigation has unveiled suspicious circumstances surrounding the replacement of the temple's flag post in 2017 and the recovery of a valuable 'Vajivahanam' artifact. The SIT is tasked with examining these events closely, tracing decision-making chains, and determining potential criminal liabilities.
The court emphasized the need for a thorough investigation due to the public trust in temple administration and the gravity of the allegations. The SIT has been urged to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice, ensuring an impartial and comprehensive probe into the alleged criminal acts.
The case is set for further review on February 9, 2026, when the SIT will present an updated status report on their findings and progress.
Bottom Line:
Investigation into alleged misappropriation of temple valuables at Sabarimala - Scientific analysis and detailed investigation reveal prima facie indicators of organized pilferage, gross mismanagement, and potential criminal conspiracy - Directions issued for a thorough, impartial, and comprehensive investigation.
