Thane, Apr 29 A sessions court here has convicted a 24-year-old man for stabbing a person during Holi celebrations when the latter refused to give him money for liquor.

While police had pressed the charge of attempt to murder against Sahil alias Sanket Dattu Satpute, the court noted that the injury caused to the victim was not fatal, and held him guilty for a lesser offence under IPC section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt).

He was sentenced for the period already undergone in jail since his arrest in March 2023.

A copy of the order passed by additional sessions judge V L Bhosale on April 20 became available on Tuesday.

As per the prosecution, Satpute and the victim knew each other. On the night of March 7, 2023, which was the day of Holi, Satpute stabbed the victim in the stomach with a knife after the latter refused to give him money for liquor and ganja.

During the trial, the victim and an eyewitness identified the accused.

While convicting him for causing grievous hurt, the judge acquitted Satpute of the charge of attempt to murder, noting that the single knife stab was not aimed at any vital organ.

The accused, who had been in jail for three years, one month, and two days, was ordered to be released forthwith upon payment of a Rs 5,000 fine, which is to be given to the victim as compensation.
