New Delhi, Apr 13 A Delhi court has sentenced a man to two years of rigorous imprisonment after he was found guilty of ramming an on-duty traffic police officer and causing grievous injuries.
Additional Sessions Judge Kumar Rajat was hearing arguments on the quantum of sentence against Deepak Kumar who was found guilty under IPC sections 333 (causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from duty), 353 (assault to deter public servant) and 186 (obstructing public servant).
Kumar was convicted for hitting an on-duty traffic police officer with his motorcycle after jumping a red light, causing grievous injuries and obstructing a public servant from discharging official duties.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on March 17, 2019, when traffic officer Narayan Singh was on duty and was issuing challans.
The accused, riding a motorcycle, jumped a red light and, despite being signalled to stop, rammed into the officer, knocking him to the ground and damaging the challan machine.
The court awarded two years' rigorous imprisonment under IPC Section 333, along with a fine of Rs 8,000. He was also sentenced to six months' rigorous imprisonment under IPC Section 353 and one month under IPC Section 186, with additional fines imposed.
The court further levied a fine of Rs 500 under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and ordered that all sentences will run concurrently.
The court granted the benefit of CrPC Section 428, allowing the period already spent in custody to be set off against the sentence.
