NGT asks DPCC to conduct water sample analysis of Kitchner Lake

New Delhi, May 27 The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to conduct an analysis of water samples collected from the Kitchner Lake in Dhaula Kuan here.

The green body is hearing a matter regarding the revival of the water body. The plea filed in 2024 submitted photographs showing its “pathetic condition” and claimed that no action had been taken despite repeated complaints.

In an order dated May 21, made available on Wednesday, a bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert members A Senthil Vel and Afroz Ahmad noted that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) filed its reply on February 16 this year, stating that remedial action had been taken.

The DDA’s response, the bench further noted, also stated that the sample test report revealed that the water quality of the lake confirmed with the requisite environmental standards.

The tribunal said that the DDA had also annexed photographs of the lake, but the petitioner’s counsel disputed them, saying they were of the Jheel Park Lake.

It directed the DDA to file an additional affidavit clarifying the position.

“In the meanwhile, to ascertain the status of water quality of the Kitchner Lake, we direct the DPCC to collect the sample from the lake, carry out the water sample analysis and submit the report before the tribunal,” the green body said.

The matter has been posted for further proceedings on September 1.
