Officials asked to consider installing CCTV cameras around prominent schools in Lucknow

Lucknow, Apr 1 The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has directed Uttar Pradesh government authorities to seriously consider a plan for installing CCTV cameras around prominent schools in the city to enable real-time traffic management.

The direction was issued by a division bench comprising Justice Alok Mathur and Justice Brijraj Singh while hearing a public interest litigation filed in 2020 by residents of the Gomti riverbank.

During earlier hearings, the court had issued multiple directions to address traffic congestion caused by schools during opening and closing hours.

In compliance with previous orders, the state government submitted a report on the performance of marshals deployed at 18 schools. The report indicated that while marshals at some schools were effective in managing traffic, their performance at several others was found to be unsatisfactory.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Raveena Tyagi, who was present during the hearing, informed the court that major intersections and roads are being monitored through the Smart City Control Room. She said a similar system of CCTV surveillance around schools could help improve traffic regulation.

The court directed the state's additional advocate general to hold detailed discussions with all concerned departments and school managements on the proposal.

The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for April 28.
