Investigation in FIR Paused as Coaching Institutes Clash Over Student's Success
In a significant development, the Rajasthan High Court has directed mediation to address a criminal litigation arising from a dispute between a minor student and coaching institutions over credit for the student's achievement in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Justice Baljinder Singh Sandhu presided over the matter, highlighting the need for an amicable resolution given the involvement of a minor and the educational institutions.
The case centers around Geetali Gupta, a minor who achieved an impressive All India Rank in the CLAT examination. The controversy began when the complainant coaching institution claimed to have tutored Gupta, only to be allegedly confronted by her father with demands following a lucrative offer from a rival coaching institution. This led to allegations of blackmail and a subsequent FIR.
During the proceedings, the High Court recognized the issue as primarily a business rivalry between the two coaching institutions, overshadowing the student’s educational achievements. The court expressed disappointment over the emergence of such a dispute, especially when it involved a minor student. The court emphasized the importance of resolving the matter swiftly to prevent it from escalating.
Justice Sandhu, in an effort to de-escalate tensions, ordered the parties involved to engage in mediation. All parties are required to appear before the Mediation Centre on January 21, 2026. The court instructed the petitioner’s counsel to distribute copies of the court order and the petition to the complainant and other accused parties via digital means such as WhatsApp or email to ensure their presence at the mediation.
Additionally, the High Court has stayed further investigation in FIR No. 04/26 until the mediation process is concluded. The court expects a report from the Mediator by February 16, 2026. During the mediation proceedings, the petitioner's father is permitted to represent her either in person or through video conferencing.
This case underscores the court’s intention to prioritize the educational interests of the minor and seek a harmonious resolution to disputes involving educational claims, thereby preventing unnecessary litigation.
Bottom Line:
Criminal litigation arising out of a dispute involving a minor student and coaching institutions over credit for the student's achievement in the CLAT examination. Mediation directed to resolve the matter, with further investigation in FIR stayed.
