Telangana High Court Criticizes Slow Progress in Industrial Accident Investigation
Court Demands Accountability in Inquiry into Tragic Incident Claiming 54 Lives
In a significant development concerning the tragic industrial accident that claimed the lives of 54 workmen, the Telangana High Court has expressed serious concerns over the lack of substantial progress in the investigation. The court, comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin, has directed the Investigating Officer to appear before the court with all pertinent records and the case diary at the next hearing scheduled for December 9, 2025.
The incident, which occurred on June 30, 2025, has led to an extensive investigation involving the examination of 237 witnesses. However, the court noted with dismay that no conclusive opinion has been formed regarding the offences and the individuals responsible. The court emphasized the necessity for a prompt and effective investigation, especially given the scale of the tragedy and the loss of lives involved.
The bench highlighted the failure to examine officials from regulating agencies and employees of the company involved in the incident, stating that such omissions hinder the investigation's progress. The court's order also pointed out that the report from the expert committee has only recently been handed over to the investigating agency, led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police.
During the proceedings, the Additional Advocate General for the State of Telangana, Mr. T. Rajinikanth Reddy, acknowledged the receipt of the expert committee's report and assured the court that appropriate actions would follow. Additionally, the court was informed about the compensation details awarded to the families of the deceased, injured, and missing workmen.
The court has granted two weeks for the company, represented by Ms. Rubaina S. Khatoon, to file its response. The next hearing is expected to shed more light on the investigation's direction and the accountability of the parties involved.
Bottom Line:
Investigation in a large-scale industrial accident resulting in loss of lives must be conducted promptly and effectively; lack of progress in investigation, including failure to examine key officials and employees, is a matter of concern for the Court.
