Hyderabad, Mar 16 A man convicted in the death of Telugu actress Pratyusha in 2002, surrendered before a city court on Monday.
His surrender follows a Supreme Court ruling on February 17, dismissing the plea of G Siddhartha Reddy, challenging his conviction in the death of the actress. It directed him to surrender within four weeks.
After Siddhartha Reddy surrendered before the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court here, he was sent to the Chanchalguda central prison.
Ruling out that there was strangulation and rape in the case, the Supreme Court had also dismissed the plea filed by P Sarojini Devi, Pratyusha's mother, who alleged foul play in the death.
Pratyusha died in Hyderabad on February 24, 2002.
In 2011, the Andhra Pradesh High Court reduced the jail sentence of Siddhartha Reddy, to two years from the five years awarded earlier.
The trial court had in 2004 sentenced Reddy to five years' imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on charges of abetment of suicide.
The case dates back to February 2002 when Reddy and Pratyusha were in a relationship with each other for six years.
They attempted a suicide pact following the family opposition to their marriage.
On February 23, 2002, both consumed pesticide, but later decided to seek emergency medical treatment.
Despite medical care, Pratyusha succumbed to the poison and Reddy survived.
