Thane, Apr 22 The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Maharashtra's Thane has awarded a compensation of nearly Rs 25 lakh to the family of a 34-year-old mason, who lost his life in a road accident involving a state-run bus in 2020.

In the order passed on April 17, tribunal member R V Mohite directed the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to pay a total of Rs 24,94,600 to the family of the deceased with 9 per cent interest from the date of filing the claim petition.

The incident occurred on November 12, 2020, when the deceased, Sakharam Mukane, was riding his motorcycle on the Mumbai-Agra Highway near Shahapur in Thane district. An MSRTC bus coming from the Nashik side rammed into his motorcycle, in which he died on the spot.

The MSRTC contested the claim alleging that the accident was caused by the negligence of the motorcyclist. The corporation claimed that Mukane was carrying four pillion riders (his wife and three children) and was attempting to cross the road at high speed near a divider where there was no zebra crossing.

However, the tribunal rejected these contentions.

The tribunal ordered that Rs 11,94,600 be paid to his mother and Rs 6,50,000 each be allocated to the two minor sons, to be kept in fixed deposits until they attain majority. The MSRTC has been directed to deposit the amount within one month.
