Hathras (UP), May 2 A court here has adjourned to May 13 the hearing in a defamation complaint filed against Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi in connection with remarks allegedly made by him in the Bul Garhi case, lawyers said on Saturday.

The complaint was filed in an MP-MLA court over Gandhi's alleged statement describing certain youths as accused in the case in which they were later acquitted. The matter came up for hearing on Saturday before Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division) Deepak Nath Saraswati.

Counsel for the complainants, Munna Singh Pundir, said arguments were heard on whether cognisance should be taken against Gandhi and whether he should be summoned. After hearing the arguments, the court fixed May 13 as the next date of hearing, he said.

Pundir said the complaint pertains to three youths -- ?Ravi, Ram Kumar alias Ramu, and Lavkush -- ?who were acquitted of rape charges in the case. He claimed that Gandhi, during a visit to the village on December 12, 2024, said that the accused were roaming free while the victim's family was confined to their home, which the complainants found objectionable.

He further said a legal notice seeking Rs 1.5 crore in damages was earlier sent to Gandhi on behalf of the three men, demanding Rs 50 lakh each.
