Varanasi, Jun 11 A court here on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife and burying her body in the courtyard of their house, a government lawyer said.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Atul Chaudhary held the accused guilty under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him, Assistant Government Advocate Rohit Maurya said.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on December 28, 2020, in Bhitari village here under the Lota police station area.
The convict killed his wife over a property dispute and buried her body in the courtyard of their house. He sprinkled salt over the body to hasten its decomposition, Maurya said.
The crime came to light after the couple's two sons, who were living in the United States, became suspicious of their father's statements regarding their mother's whereabouts, he said.
On their insistence, the courtyard was dug up and the body was recovered. The man was arrested three days after the crime, Maurya said.
