CBI court sentences 3 men to life for murder of advocate Indra Dev Singh

Lucknow, Jul 7 A special CBI court sentenced three men to life imprisonment on Tuesday for the murder of advocate Indra Dev Singh, the former president of the Lucknow Bar Association and father of Noida Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh, in 2002.


Three other accused in the case died during the pendency of the trial.


Special CBI Judge Vayu Nandan Mishra sentenced shooter Vikram Yadav, Panna Singh and Brajesh Kumar Yadav to life imprisonment after convicting them of murder and criminal conspiracy.


The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on each convict under the respective counts.


Vikram Yadav and Brajesh Kumar were awarded life imprisonment and fined Rs 30,000 each for the offence of murder. Additionally, Vikram Yadav, Panna Singh, and Brajesh Kumar received life sentences and fines of Rs 30,000 each for criminal conspiracy.


The court had convicted the three men on June 30.


According to special public prosecutor KP Singh, Vikram Yadav was already lodged in jail, while Panna Singh and Brajesh Kumar were out on bail. Immediately after their conviction, the court cancelled the bail of the latter two and sent them back to jail pending sentencing.


Advocate RK Yadav, appearing for complainant Nayantara, assisted the CBI prosecution during the trial.


According to the prosecution, Indra Dev Singh was shot dead on August 8, 2002, near the district magistrate's office while returning from court on his scooter. The FIR was lodged by his wife, Nayantara.


During the investigation by the police and later the CBI, it was alleged that Vikram Yadav fired the fatal shots while Brajesh Kumar rode the scooter used in the attack.


Initially, Surjan Lal Verma, Dr Sushma Verma and Suresh Verma were named in the FIR, but no evidence was found against them during the investigation. The probe later named Vikram Yadav, Panna Singh, Brajesh Kumar, Manna Lal Gupta, Ved Prakash alias Neta and Chhote Lal alias Chhotu as accused.


However, alleged conspirator Ved Prakash alias Neta, Manna Lal Gupta and Chhote Lal died before the trial concluded.
