Thane, Jul 8 A sessions court in Thane has convicted three members of a family for staying in India without valid documents, ordering their deportation to Bangladesh after completing their jail terms.
Additional Sessions Judge G T Pawar, however, acquitted them of forgery charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as the prosecution failed to prove that they had manufactured or knowingly used forged identity documents.
The copy of the order of July 3 was made available on Tuesday.
According to Additional Public Prosecutor Manisha Pawse, the family was arrested on July 3, 2024, during a police raid in Thane city. While they produced several local identity cards, the court found they failed to establish a valid legal entry from Bangladesh.
The court sentenced Mehboob Dirbar Khan and his wife Minara to two years of simple imprisonment, while their daughter, Pinky, alias Tasmin Mehboob Khan, was sentenced to five months in jail, mapping the periods they had already undergone as undertrials. They were also fined Rs 1,000 each.
Holding multiple local identity credentials does not amount to a legal permit, the court held.
The court directed jail and police authorities to initiate the formal process to deport all three convicted individuals to Bangladesh upon the expiration of their sentences.
