Janakpuri Biker death: Delhi court sends main contractor to one day judicial custody

New Delhi, March 10 A Delhi court on Tuesday remanded the contractor to one day's judicial custody, who was arrested in connection with the bank employee's death after his bike fell into a pit in Janakpuri.

The contractor, Himanshu Gupta, had been evading arrest and was held in Rajasthan's Udaipur on Tuesday morning after a rigorous manhunt by the police, officials said.

The Delhi Police produced Gupta before Duty Magistrate Anuradha Sonkar, who sent him to one day's judicial custody.

The case pertains to the death of Kamal Dhyani, who worked as an assistant manager at the Rohini branch of HDFC Bank, on the night of February 5, after his motorcycle fell into a 15-foot-deep sewage pit allegedly left open during work being carried out by the Delhi Jal Board in Janakpuri.

Last month, the Delhi High Court refused to grant anticipatory bail to two contractors, Himanshu Gupta and Kavish Gupta, observing that public roads cannot be allowed to turn into death traps.
