Madhya Pradesh High Court Orders Immediate Action to Address Contaminated Water Crisis in Indore

Municipal Corporation and State Government directed to ensure clean water supply and medical treatment for affected residents in Bhagirathpura

In a significant intervention, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued directives to the Indore Municipal Corporation and the State Government to address the alarming situation of contaminated drinking water supply in the Bhagirathpura area of Indore City. The court's decision comes in response to a petition filed by Ritesh Inani, highlighting the severe public health crisis resulting from the supply of impure water that has affected numerous residents and caused fatalities.

The bench comprising Justices Rajesh Kumar Gupta and B.P. Sharma emphasized the urgent need for remedial measures in their judgment dated December 31, 2025. The court ordered the Municipal Corporation to ensure the regular supply of clean and pure drinking water to the affected areas. Additionally, the State Government has been instructed to provide the best possible medical treatment to those affected by the crisis, with the government bearing all associated expenses.

The court's decision was influenced by the petitioner's argument that the contaminated water supply had led to widespread infections and deaths. The petitioner urged the court to mandate the authorities to take immediate steps to prevent further casualties by providing clean water and medical care.

During the proceedings, the counsel for the Municipal Corporation assured the court that they have deployed 20 water tankers to the affected area and are committed to maintaining a steady supply of clean water. Similarly, the State's counsel affirmed that directives have been issued to hospitals and medical professionals to ensure proper treatment for all affected individuals, with the government covering the costs.

As an interim measure, the court has directed both the Municipal Corporation and the State Government to submit a detailed status report on the next hearing date, January 2, 2026. This report must outline the number of individuals affected, details of hospital admissions, and the medical facilities provided.

This judicial intervention highlights the critical role of the judiciary in safeguarding public health and ensuring that government bodies fulfill their responsibilities in times of crisis. The court's directives aim to mitigate the immediate health risks faced by the residents of Bhagirathpura and ensure accountability from the authorities involved.

Bottom Line:

Municipal Corporation and State Government directed to ensure supply of clean and pure drinking water to affected areas and provide best medical treatment to affected individuals.

Statutory provision(s): Interim Relief - Directions issued to Municipal Corporation and State Government.
