UP court awards life term to man in murder over land dispute

Ballia (UP), May 6 A local court in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, has sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a murder case that dates back two and a half years, primarily linked to a land dispute, officials said on Wednesday.


According to prosecution sources, the incident took place on the night of October 25, 2023, in Shivpur Nai Basti Byasi village under Dubhar police station area, where a man identified as Yatharth Vikram Singh was shot dead over a dispute related to land and a brick kiln.


Based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, Rinki Singh, a case was registered against seven accused - Baljeet Singh, Sarvjeet Singh, Amarjeet Singh, Suryabhan Pandey, Kaushal Kishore Pandey, Manoj Singh and Shera Kunwar - under relevant sections, including murder, the sources said.


Police had filed a chargesheet against all seven accused after completing the investigation.


Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh said that the court of Additional District Judge Puneet Kumar, after hearing both sides, on Tuesday convicted Baljeet Singh and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh.


The court, however, acquitted the remaining six accused due to lack of evidence, he added.
